Transport.
Main Roads.

The distance from the regional centre to Kyiv, the capital of the country, is 788 km., to Moskov 1713 km., to Prague 900 km., to Budapest – 360 km., to Bucharest – 895 km., to Bratislava – 545 km. Zakarpattia has already developed a rather efficient transportation system. The total extent of motorways covers over 3,5 thousand square kilometres, 97% of them having hard road surfacing. The density of motorways per 1 thousand square kilometres of the territory is 268 km, that makes up 271 km per 1 thousand km of the country. The main arterial roads that provide communication with other regions as well as connect sanatoriums are Uzhhorod – Mukacheve – Khust – Tyachiv – Rakhiv – Ivano-Frankivsk, Mukachevo – Svalyava – Stryi, Uzhhorod –Perechyn – Svalyava, Perechyn – Velykyi Bereznyi – Uzhok. Across the territory of the region which is 140 km in extent runs the international highway Kyiv – Chop.
Creating and exploitating the national network of international transport corridors is of ever growing importance. Through the region territory stretches international transport corridors №5 (Kryts’Kyi) following the route Lissabon – Triest – Liubliana – Budapest – Kyiv – Volgograd which connects western and eastern Europenean national communications (main roads, railways, etc.) in order to secure intercontinental transportation of goods in the Europe Asian direction. The given transport corridors, in particular its minor transport networks on the territory of Zakarpattia, intersect with the branches of the international transport corridor The Baltic Sea – The Black Sea (Gdans’k - Odessa) for passenger and cargo transportation from the north to the south of Europe and vice versa.

 

Frontier infrastructure.

Along the perimeter of the state border which is 467,3 km long there have been arranged 16 frontier posts and customs controls (nine of which have the international status, another six – the interstate one) and eight posts of simplified (rapid) transit.
Among them are the following: “Uzhhorod”, “Malyi Bereznyi”, “Tysa”, “Luzhanka”, “Diakovo”, “Vylok” (international highway posts) and “Pavlovo”, “Chop-Railway”, “Solovka”, “Diakovo” (international railways posts). There is also the international airway border transit post “Uzhhorod-Airpost” functioning in the Region. In addition the  simplified (rapid) border transit posts are functioning here as well: “Dzvinkove”, “Kosyno”, “Luzhanka”, “Vylok”, “Diakovo” (highroads) and “Teresva”, “Diakovo”, “Rachiv” (international railways). The simplified transit posts “Khyzha”, “Teresva” and “Diakovo” are readily available for population. The marked posts being in service makes the whole infrastructure being more attractive to foreigners and favours their frequent visiting the region. It also instigates developing recreational facilities at regional resort under certain conditions.

 

Passanger transit

Presently sixty eight interurban routes are fully exploited to enable passenger transit. The communication is provided daily from the city of Uzhhorod to the regional centres such as Lviv, Luts’k, Ivano – Frankivs’k, Chernivtsi; to the cities of Slovakia – Bratislava, Mikhailovtse, Gumenne, Priashiv, Koshitse; to the Check cities Dobzhyna, Prague, Brno; and to the Hungarian city of Nired’gaza.
The regional railways are 1476 km in extent, from which 785 km represent major communications, half of them being electrified. Through the railway junctions of Chop, Mukacheve,  Batiovo, Uzhhorod there run the most significant inland railway lines – Chop – Uzhhorod – Uzhok – Lviv, Chop – Solotvyno and the railway communication with Hungary, Slovakia, Roumania as well as with the cities of Lviv, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Simferopol through three Carpathian passes etc. is maintained.

 

Air Communication

In Uzhhorod there is located a civil airport with the transit capacity of 1500 passengers per day that has earned the status 4 «D» due to this regular flights from  Uzhhorod  to Kyiv, Budapest and other places of destination are offered. In Mukacheve there is also a former airbase presently out of service which may be brought into operation for civil purposes to the common benefit. Zakarpattia falls into 18 administrative-territorial units, among which there are 5 cities of regional subordination (Uzhhorod, Mukacheve, Khust, Beregove, Chop) and 13 districts (Beregivs’kyi, Velykobereznyans’kyi, Vynogradivs’kyi, Volovets’kyi, Irshavs’kyi, Mizhhirs’kyi, Mukachivs’kyi, Perechyns’kyi, Rachivs’kyi, Svalyavsykyi, Tiachivs’kyi, Uzhhorods’kyi and Khustskyi)
